Born and raised in Cape Town, Sopranist (Male soprano) Nathan Julius was almost immediately plunged into a hub of music, and hasn’t left ever since. Nathan soon saw his musical ambition heighten after watching a presentation by the renowned Drakensberg Boys Choir School. His journey began upon being accepted and attending this renowned music school, working with South Africa’s best and being blessed with unique opportunities. Bea de Wit (pianist) and Johann van der Sandt (conductor) were amongst the musicians that inspired him to strive for excellence in every performance. Nathan has toured extensively across Europe with the Drakensberg Boys Choir as a soloist and chorister, and has been exposed to much acclaim in world class venues. In his final year at the music school, boy soprano Nathan started to experience a change in his voice. He decided to counteract nature’s course, and train his soprano register consistently to retain his crystal tone. He fully became a sopranist in his years at Hilton College, under the training of Jaco Dippenaar, and
various master classes with experienced vocalists, Antionette Blyth (UCT lecturer), Catherine Wyn-Rogers (UK Opera singer) being a few. After receiving his distinction in Grade 8 Voice in 2015,
Nathan was soon able to expand his vocal prowess by performing with many well-known artists in South Africa and abroad, including a performance of Handel’s Messiah with Richard Cock and Jo’burg Festival Orchestra as alto soloist, and Haydn’s Creation with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra.
He has also performed in the Cape Minstrels’ Singing Competition, coming 2nd place, and featured as a soloist on a CD produced by the Midlands Chamber Choir (under the direction of Jaco Dippenaar). A highlight in his singing career was sharing the stage with Julliard Graduate and Opera singer Laetitia Grimaldi Spitzer, and piano virtuoso Ammiel Bushakevitz in late May 2016. In 2017,
Nathan attended The University of Cape Town Opera School for a semester until he took up his studies in singing, specializing in early music performance practice at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, Basel. Studying now with Rosa Dominguez, Nathan’s goal is to break any barriers confronting the countertenor voice by including a vast variety in his repertoire. At the schola, Nathan has taken part in a master class series by Margreet Honig and has been in a few projects with Maestro Andrea Marcon. Remaining in Basel, He continues his Master’s degree in September 2020.
